Team vs the Individual
The Superbowl has come and gone, I had picked my team and stuck with them, not the popular choice especially in NYC. It was not the game that really interested me but it was the team aspect. Really, it wasn’t who won or lost but who contributed to the loss, who road the coattails on the win. Why? As a runner it’s me against a clock, a few are lucky and good enough to run against some of the best. In the end it’s still about the clock. How do you get there? Beyond the time commitment its the effort and sacrifice, physically, mentally and to our relationships. But it takes bit of selfishness.
Back to the Super Bowl, 3 dropped passes in the last drive, what do you think, other than damn I was this close, and I could do nothing! And that’s what lead me to running, it happens in our professional careers someone drops the ball, some can’t remember the play or why we are here. So we and I do mean WE! Lost again. But as a runner I only have one person to blame, rather hold accountable, its not coach or the plan (mostly, you do have to have a good coach, i do have one, Marc) and that’s me…..or you.
It might be the competitive part of me, performance, it has to be measured and can be. The rest….
Also we have to be set up for success, not starting in the middle of the pack, not that there is not sacrifice as a team member, but I know crossing the finish line was it the best possible effert, plan…..I think we build from just finishing or surviving to I can do way better than that…
What I learned last weekend, is, to put yourself in the best position to achive the objective else its easy to be disappointed and look to blame the circumstances. I guess I just have to make sure I know which are fun races and which are for fun….but is any race really for fun?
