Q:I am new to running. I just turned 50. I started running last year. My goal is to do my first Marathon this year. I ran two 1/2 marathons last year. How long have you been running? How long have you been running marathons? Do you have anything in your life that hinders your goals/training?

first congrats on the running, and 2 halts in your first year great!
I have been running on and off since my early 30’s when i got interested in biking but didn’t really want to do road bike racing so i started doing duathlons, half marathons. my first race was a 1/2 since a co-worker said if you do it i will too, he didn’t I did. :-) so for the last 22 years i have been running on and off.
my first attempt at a marathon was back in 2004ish when i failed due to equipment failure, blew out a shoe, my first competed marathon was in Jan 2010 in Miami and completed Miami last year also.
your third question is interesting, the best answer is just about everything can hinder my running/training, work, home, family, fun outside, getting enough sleep and i like to eat good food, not just crap and love wine and beer. also work has me entertain quit a bit.
best way around all that is have a schedule which lets you train, for me its up at 4 and run/train before work, so the temptations don’t get in the way (mostly) so 4AM awakening for me.
the best way to get on and keep on the training for your first marathon is pick the date, PAY the FEE, and work out the plan, and tell people. this way there is a bit of extra motivation. Most of my friends, family co-workers know about my running and racing, most feel guilty they don’t do as much.
also at our ages we have to think about cross training and strength training. And my goals go beyond just completing a marathon and are multi-year endeavors, which lets you avoid the let down of well “i did that, now what?”
